The Five Pillars: #4 Destined For Happiness

Updated: Mar 17

“You have made us for yourself oh Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” --St. Augustine

We continue our series on the five identity pillars. Once secure in our foundation, we can truly set out on mission for the life we were created for, secure in who we are, why we are here and where we are going because you will know that you matter, you are good and you are enough.

We all know that quote above. An oldy but a goody as it stands the test of time again and again and again. We think that job, or this relationship or the flavor of ice cream is going to be the thing that satisfies us and eventually we become disappointed with our disappointment because inevitably, it all falls short.

There is a happy ending to this seemingly endless frustration. We were created, destined to be united with our creator. Destined to rest in the heart of the Trinity. Created for the sole purpose to share in the divine life of God, in an eternal exchange of loving and being loved. That is what it means to be created “in our image, after our likeness”. God intends to divinize us with his grace and the only emotion that can come from that is sheer joy.

If you are unhappy, it’s because you are not yet at the end of your story. The thing is, sometimes the emotions feel so heavy and hard, and heavenly bliss seems to far away and almost too good to be true, that we can let the hard emotions win the day and lose sight of our horizon of hope. The devil wants that. We essentially take ourselves out of the game at that point and his work becomes easy and I know none of us wants that.

Be gentle with yourself. Maybe next time you feel down, disappointed, discouraged or disillusioned, you can catch yourself and see it as a reminder that it’s normal, almost expected. You can just think, “Oh yea, this makes sense. I’m not in heaven yet!” and move on with your day. But if you need to still process those hard emotions, do it! Either do it because you have learned how, or get coached to learn the ropes and get walked through the process. There is something beautiful in every emotion, hard ones and delightful ones. Coaching can help you see the beauty through the pain, the message through the mess, and it’s usually the hard ones that carry the most comforting message of all.
