I almost laughed as I heard myself say this statement to my daughter as she haphazardly tried to justify her need to wave her little bedtime flashlight around the room as if she were at a rave.
Exasperated by a prolonged bedtime routine, I asked her,
“Why are you doing that?!” to which she replied,
“I’m looking at my face, mom!”.
I paused for a moment as it struck me how impossible that excuse was and I offered my rebuttal in fatigue,
“You can’t look at your own face, Lyana!”
I am not a parenting coach, not even a little bit, but I do enjoy when parenting gives me the opportunity to hear things I see or notice things my kids do that feels like a window into conversation with the Lord, and I chuckled as my mind danced through the connection of what I had just said to her and the deeper truth of that statement.
You can’t look at your own face.
This is true. On your own, unaided, it is impossible to see what people see when they see you 😉. As frustrating as it is, we need our eyes to see what is too close for them to take in, and so we lean on the aid of mirrors and reflections to make sure our hair is right and there’s nothing in our teeth!
Just so, a coach is a mirror for your mind.
So often our thinking is so fast we don’t catch it, our assumptions so forgone, we don’t realize they may not hold weight. So often we don’t know entirely why we are so upset or we wish we could understand why we care so darn much about some things.
As a coach, I offer you a mirror for your mind. The job of this kind of coaching is simple yet profound - to help someone slow down, to help them gain insight and awareness of the assumptions from which they operate, the values they are working to uphold, the beliefs they are clinging to. All things which lie deep within the mind and heart of the people I work with, but often evade their notice or seem locked up somewhere deep inside, inaccessible and out of reach.
I get to reflect your mind back to you and in doing so, you get to experience a clarity and freedom that up to that point may have evaded you.
It’s not magic, it is time, intention and skill.
So often we minimize our feelings of hurt or anger believing it’s best to move on and we allow things to slide into the subconscious parts of our mind where they still can make waves only now we’ve forgotten why. I help you learn to identify and name your emotions. I help you process your emotional pain or learn to tolerate the discomfort of the unknown.
In short, I get to be a mirror of your human experience and help you put into words the “unthought known” of your Interior Life so that your mind and heart can rest and work from a place of greater integration and peace.
If that interests you, reach out!
I look forward to seeing who God places at my door.
